Metabolized to steviol; excreted as glucuronide. No effect on blood glucose.

Permitted in EU Annex II with specifications for steviol equivalent content.

US regulatory status (FDA)

Steviol glycosides from Stevia rebaudiana are permitted in the U.S. under 21 CFR 172.601 as a high-intensity sweetener. FDA has also responded to multiple GRAS notices for specific stevia-derived sweeteners. U.S. labeling uses names such as "steviol glycosides" or "stevia leaf extract" rather than E 960.

0–4 mg/kg body weight per day (EFSA, as steviol equivalents).
