Sodium benzoate

Sodium salt of benzoic acid.

Preservative in soft drinks, fruit juices, and acidic condiments.

Same as benzoic acid after dissociation in acidic media.

Same considerations as E210 regarding sensitivity and ascorbic acid interaction.

Permitted in specified EU food categories.

Sodium benzoate is GRAS in the U.S. and widely used in acidic beverages and condiments. FDA notes it is safe at levels found in food when used according to good manufacturing practice. Like benzoic acid, it is regulated under GRAS rather than as a separately petitioned food additive.
