Sunset Yellow FCF

Synthetic azo dye (disodium 6-hydroxy-5-[(4-sulfonatophenyl)azo]-2-naphthalenesulfonate).

Orange-yellow coloring in beverages, desserts, cereals, and snack foods.

Generally recognized as safe at ADI levels. Included in EU labelling scheme for possible effects on activity and attention in children.

Allergic or intolerance reactions reported rarely. Azo dye sensitivity may apply.

Permitted with EU labelling requirements for certain products.

Sunset Yellow is approved in the U.S. as the certified color FD&C Yellow No. 6. Like other FD&C dyes, each batch must be certified by FDA before use in food. The EU groups it with azo dyes subject to attention warnings; the U.S. regulates it as a certified synthetic color without that EU-specific labeling requirement.
